Oakfield Primary School, Sylvia Crescent, Totton, Southampton, Hampshire, SO40 3LN

Curriculum

The subjects taught in this school are in accordance with those laid down in the National Curriculum.

We have a Curriculum Overviews for each half term here.

The National Curriculum comprises ten subjects. There are five core subjects:

English (Literacy)
Maths (Numeracy)
Science
Information Communication Technology (ICT)
Religious Education (R.E.)

The remaining subjects are:
Design and Technology
History
Geography
Music
Art
Physical Education (P.E.)
Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Teachers are continually assessing children’s progress within these subjects and at 7 and 11 children are assessed in some of the subjects by means of national Standards Assessment Tasks (SATS).

A written report on each child, indicating progress, behaviour and attitude towards school life is sent home once a year. In addition we hold open school sessions and interview evenings when parents can see what their child is doing and can discuss progress with class teachers.

Literacy

Our Literacy lessons at Oakfield aim to ensure that all our children leave as confident readers and writers, who have a love a reading and are able to write for a variety of purposes. We follow the revised framework for Literacy and link our literacy work to topics that are related to the children’s interests.

The children learn about reading and writing through a wide range of different types of books, the use of computers, speaking and listening activities and drama. Each class also has regular phonic sessions throughout the week and we use Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar to ensure a systematic approach across the school.

The children work as part of a class, group and individually and work with the teacher and independently on a range of exciting stories, poems and non fiction texts.

Parents are encouraged to support their children at home with their reading through our graded reading scheme and books from the library.

Numeracy

We follow the Foundation Stage and National Numeracy and new framework for Mathematics for the teaching of mathematics. These are structured programmes that set out the teaching and learning of maths for each year group. All skills in Number, measurement, shape and space and data handling are covered. Children are taught the skills necessary to solve problems and are given the opportunity to investigate maths using real life situations. Each class will have a lesson of approximately forty minutes to one hour each day, dependent on the year group.

Key Stage 1
During key stage 1 pupils develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussion. They learn to count, read, write and order numbers to 100 and beyond. They develop a range of mental calculation skills and use these confidently in different settings. They learn about shape and space through practical activity which builds on their understanding of their immediate environment. They begin to grasp mathematical language, using it to talk about their methods and explain their reasoning when solving problems.

Key Stage 2
During key stage 2 pupils use the number system more confidently. They move from counting reliably to calculating fluently with all four number operations. They always try to tackle a problem with mental methods before using any other approach. Pupils explore features of shape and space and develop their measuring skills in a range of contexts. They discuss and present their methods and reasoning using a wider range of mathematical language, diagrams and charts.

Science

Science stimulates and excites pupils curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. Pupils observe, explore, investigate and ask questions about living things, a wide range of materials and phenomena often through enquiry.  Children work together to collect evidence to help them answer questions and to link this to scientific ideas.  They can then begin to make links between their ideas and to explain things using simple models and theories.  Children apply their knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas to familiar phenomena, everyday things and their personal health.  As part of the Science curriculum we make full use of the school grounds.

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

Information Technology is concerned with the use of modern tools such as the computer and the Internet. The school has now got two computer "suites" which are networked and connected to the Internet. All classes have at least one PC. All classes have interactive whiteboards which teachers and children use them as a daily learning tool. The interactive whiteboards are also networked. Pupils have supervised access to the internet and we ask all parents to sign a permission slip for internet use. ICT is used extensively across the curriculum.

Religious Education

This is taught in accordance with the agreed Hampshire County Council Syllabus.

Our aims in R.E. are to help the children understand religious beliefs, practices and insights so they may eventually form their own beliefs and judgments and their own allegiances and commitments. All parents have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and, should you wish to exercise this right, please discuss this with the Headteacher.

Collective Worship
In accordance with the requirements of the 1988 Education Act, a daily act of worship is held in school. This will be a broadly Christian nature. This happens in a variety of ways, whole school assemblies, Upper and Lower school assemblies and class quiet time. The teaching staff share responsibility for providing experiences that contribute to the spiritual, moral, cultural and social development of all children and that affirm the corporate life of the school. We have regular celebration and Oakleaf assemblies, and also for various festivals throughout the year. Parents are invited to join us for these events and we also have a policy of inviting visitors to lead our collective worship.
As with religious Education, parents have the right to withdraw their child from Collective Worship. If you wish to consider this please discuss this with the Headteacher. School R.E. Policy

History

History fires pupils’ curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Pupils consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies organised their politics, and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions. As they do this they develop a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. In history, pupils find evidence, weigh it up and reach their own conclusions. To do this they need to be able to research, sift through evidence, and argue for their point of view – skills that are prized in adult life. At Oakfield the children will study the following periods of history through topic work:- the Egyptians, Victorians, Life since the 1930’s, Romans, Tudors, the Ancient Greeks and Local history studies. Children will extend their historical knowledge through acquiring information from personal experience, pictures, photographs, books, television, video and the adults around them. Drawing conclusions from the examination of evidence enables children to make judgments about the causes that affected the lives of people in the past.

Geography

Geography provokes and answers questions about the natural and human worlds. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps, and a range of investigative and problem solving skills both inside and outside the classroom. It is a focus for understanding and resolving issues about the environment and sustainable development. As pupils study Geography they encounter different societies and cultures. This helps them realise how nations rely on each other. Children have the opportunity to explore and investigate their immediate environment and their wider environment by visits to the surrounding area, including the New Forest

Music

The school has a wide variety of musical instruments and all children are encouraged to"make" music. Children also have the opportunity to learn the recorder at lunchtime and County Music Teachers visit the school each week to teach violin, woodwind, guitar and keyboard. Parents of children wishing to have lessons from visiting teachers should enquire at the school office and have their child’s name placed on a waiting list. We currently make a small charge for these lessons.

Art

Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils use colour, form, texture, pattern and different materials and processes to communicate what they see, feel and think. Children appreciate and enjoy Art through exploring ideas and meanings in the work of artists, craftspeople and designers and learn about the diverse roles and functions of art, craft and design in contemporary life, and in different times and cultures. Through Art and Design activities the children develop their confidence in their own abilities.
