Parent & Teacher Association (PTA)
Overview
Oakfield’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) is a dedicated group of parents, carers and school staff working together to support the school community. Our aim is to enhance the educational experience of all pupils by organising events, fundraising, and fostering strong relationships between families and the school.
Our Mission
The PTA has multiple aims as part of its mission:
- to build a strong school community by encouraging collaboration between parents, teachers and pupils
- to support the school with additional resources and activities that enrich the learning experience
- to raise funds for projects, equipment and experiences that benefit pupils
- to organise fun and engaging events for families to enjoy.
How you can get involved
We welcome all parents and carers to join the PTA in any capacity that suits them.
Whether you can volunteer regularly or help occasionally, your contribution makes a difference! Here’s how you can support us:
- Attend PTA meetings – share ideas and stay updated on school initiatives.
- Volunteer at events – help run stalls, set up activities or assist with logistics.
- Offer skills and services – if you have expertise in event planning, marketing, graphic design or other areas, we’d love your support.
- Make a donation – contributions, whether financial or material, help fund school projects and activities.
How we raise money
Like most PTAs, the majority of our funds are raised through the events that we run. Some of ourmost popular events are:
- 'Oakfest' Summer Fair
- Movie Nights
- Discos
- Mother's Day, Father's Day and Christmas Gift Rooms (where children buy a ticket and choose a gift for their loved one).
- Freeze Pop Friday / Feel The Love Friday / Festive Friday (we sell freeze pops or confectionery in the playground at the end of the school day).
- Refreshments at school events, such as the Nativity.
There is always something going on! It's so rewarding to see the children having fun at events or enjoying using a piece of new equipment that the PTA has donated.
When selling tickets to events, we use the Classlist app which facilitates online payments, to reduce the amount of cash we have to handle. We also have a Sum-Up card machine.
Role of the Committee
Oakfield's PTA is a registered charity (registration number 1179165). The Committee consists of four Officers: Chair (or Co-Chairs), Vice-Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary (all of whom are trustees). This is a minimum requirement for a charity. However, there are active PTA members without specific roles who also attend committee meetings, and together we form a dedicated team to lead events.
The Committee meets on a regular basis, usually once per term, with smaller working groups meeting as necessary when we are planning larger events such as Oakfest.
Where possible, we get input from the students on the School Council when we’re planning events (such as which film they’d like to see on Movie Nights).
We hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) for all PTA members at the start of each academic year. Any member can nominate themselves as an Officer if there is a role to be filled, and we hold a vote at the AGM.
PTA Member's Rights and Responsibilities
Any parent or guardian of a pupil attending Oakfield can volunteer to become a member of the PTA, with the vested interest in enhancing the school for all pupils. It's essential that all members conduct themselves positively and professionally for our meetings and events to be a success.
- All members will be encouraged to make relevant and positive contributions to meetings they attend.
- Members have the right to be treated with compassion and respect, and to express their feelings and opinions appropriately without being interrupted. They have the responsibility to respect the feelings and opinions of others, and the decisions made by the Committee.
- All members work as volunteers, for no personal gain, and all actions must be in the best interest of the school. Genuine expenses incurred will be reimbursed (proof of purchase and prior approval from the Chair(s) will be required).
- Members have the right to communicate together, using technology (including social media and WhatsApp) responsibly and not disrespecting any other PTA member, students, school staff, or the school in any verbal or written communications.
- Members must respect the school building, school equipment, other members’ property, and the privacy of pupils and staff. They must adhere to Oakfield Academy's and The Gateway Trust's Policies while on the school site.
- Active members involved in events are asked to ensure the safety of children as a priority and retain an appropriate level of confidentiality, i.e. we don’t talk about other people's children or their behaviour.
- Members attending PTA-run functions with their own children are expected to assume responsibility for their children’s behaviour and safety.
What has the PTA contributed to at the school?
The funds you've raised through our events and gift rooms have enabled the Oakfield PTA to replace the outdoor book store for the junior playground.
Children that would prefer to quietly read a book, play a board game, or enjoy colouring during playtime can help themselves to activities and a cushion from the box.
Thank you to all the parents/carers that buy tickets and contribute to the PTA through volunteering; it really does make a difference to the school.
